Hello from the desk of Irene G, Kevin and the Team at 90 for Life Australia

It’s that time of year again it seems, for most of us, with gloomy grey skies, bone-chilling weather and winter colds and flu’s.

But why are we prone to get the sniffles during winter?  Being chilly doesn’t literally make you catch a cold, no matter what your parents said whenever you went out into the freezing weather.  But it certainly seems like the coldest season is, well, cold season and we do normally see an uptick in things like colds, flu’s and respiratory ailments at this time of year.

The answer as to why flu and colds are a winter disease is not fully known although many theories abound. However, scientific studies do suggest that in regions that have a winter season, the influenza virus survives longer in cold, dry air, so it has a greater chance of infecting people at that time of year.

Cold and flu infections both have similar symptoms, however, only influenza viruses cause the flu, while many different viruses can cause colds.  The flu virus can lead to serious complications, including bronchitis, viral or bacterial pneumonia and even death in elderly and chronically ill patients and infects on average, about 10% of the population each year.

Both infections can spread very quickly.  A 2014 study found that a pathogen placed on a single doorknob could essentially infiltrate an entire office building within a matter of hours. Surfaces in the break room were particularly vulnerable to the spread of viruses.

Symptoms for the flu rear their ugly head about a day to four days after you’ve been exposed to the virus.  But if you take the right precautions, you can save yourself a whole lot of Kleenex. “An ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure”.  We all want to avoid the signs of a cold or flu settling in and set to derail us, however temporarily, from our day-to-day lives.

No matter what’s ahead on your calendar, one thing is clear you can’t afford to let a cold or flu infection slow you down.  Luckily, nature has provided us with ample natural ways to give your immune system a helping hand.

Now let’s examine a few of the above highly effective medicinal elements:
Zinc – A recent research review showed taking zinc during the first few days of a cold may shorten the misery of an upper respiratory infection.  The review was of 15 studies with 1,360 participants and was published by the Cochrane group, an international collaboration of researchers that reviews evidence behind therapeutic interventions.  It also found that zinc may cut the number of days that the symptoms lasted.  It also appeared to prevent colds in people who used it over the course of about five months.

C-FX – High dose vitamin C has been shown to be an absolute powerhouse regarding its ability to promote better immune function.  Clinical studies have shown that when people take high enough doses, it could reduce the severity and duration suffered by patients by 8% in adults and 14% in children, on average.

Olive leaf extract – Various studies confirm that olive leaf extract has antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties.  In addition, olive leaf extract can boost the immune system and is a potent antioxidant.  It is used to treat viral infections such as influenza, swine flu, common cold, herpes and hepatitis B.

Echinacea – New research by an international panel of researchers has shown, for the first time, the efficacy of Echinacea against flu viruses.  According to the study, published in the Virology Journal, Echinacea extract effectively blocked the replication of all examined flu viruses by over 99%, including the H1N1 strain.

Medicinal Mushrooms – New research has found that special structural sugars called beta-glucans are found in all medicinal mushrooms. These beta-glucans pack a powerful punch, and they are what help to modulate the immune system—stimulating attack only when necessary.  This adaptogenic quality is one reason why medicinal mushrooms are so effective against a wide range of disorders that involve the immune system.  Each mushroom stimulates the immune system in its own unique way.

Killer Bee Propolis – Propolis is known as the immune system of the beehive. Researchers have confirmed Killer Bee Propolis’ anti-bacterial actions – even against a number of drug-resistant strains.  In this day and age of increasing antibiotic resistance, Propolis offers us an effective option.

We could go on about the medicinal elements in this highly effective pack but room dictates so until next time crusaders have an awesome day.

“Nature itself is the best Physician.” Hippocrates.

Have another fantastic health filled day crusaders
